Before you can start to learn to drive you need a Provisional Driving
Licence. You also need to know that your eyesight meets certain requirements. You must be able to read a vehicle number plate
in the new format at a minimum distance of 20.5 metres (20 metres old format number plates). If you need glasses or contact
lenses, you must wear them while you are driving.
APPLYING FOR YOUR PROVISONAL LICENCE.
You must be at least 17 years old before you can drive. As an exception
if you are receiving Disability Living Allowance, you can get your Provisional Licence at 16.
Driving Licences are issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency
(DVLA). You can get an application form (D1) from any post office and send your form with a passport style photo. Or you can
apply online at www.direct.gov.uk
What if I want to have my first driving lesson on my 17th birthday? Do I have to
wait till I turn 17 to get my provisional licence?
No. You can apply for your provisional licence upto 3 months before your 17th birthday!
After applying for your licence, it should arrive in approximately 3 weeks.
